How to Clean a Mattress

After a hard day’s work, it’s normal to want to come home, jump into bed, and snag some well-deserved relaxation time. Thanks to our reliable beds and mattresses, it’s easier to achieve comfortable sleep to keep you happy, energetic, and more productive during waking hours.

When it comes to sleeping well, people don’t often consider the cleanliness of their mattress—but this can affect sleep quality! Giving your mattress the care it deserves means you can lie in a fresh, comfortable bed that maximises your rest time. Knowing how to clean a mattress is essential to mattress care, so you can protect and maximise your investment. Here’s how to start!

Our Mattress Cleaning Method

There are plenty of ways you can clean your mattress. While you can hire a professional to deep clean them, the good news is that mattress cleaning is far easier than you think. If you’re happy to clean your own, here’s how to do it step-by-step.

1. Start with the beddings

Strip off your mattress’ beddings—sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and mattress cover. You can put them in a washing machine while you clean your mattress to save time. Ideally, you’ll want to wash the bedding in hot water to remove dust mites much more effectively.

2. Gather your cleaning supplies

Next is the mattress. Gather the cleaning materials you need to deep clean your mattress. You’ll need a vacuum, steamer, enzyme cleaner, laundry detergent, baking soda, cold water, and cleaning cloths. Gather and place them near you so you can easily reach for the necessary supplies. Trust that this will save you time!

3. Vacuum first

Before putting any cleaning agent, you need to vacuum your mattress. Go over the entire surface and the sides to remove the dust.

4. Remove stains

Spot-cleaning is an effective way to remove stains without getting your mattress too wet. Use an enzyme cleaner when dealing with biological stains. Spray it onto a clean cloth and blot the stained area. Apply cold water to a separate clean cloth and blot until the stain lifts. You can try a DIY cleaning solution to whiten yellow stains: mix one cup of hydrogen peroxide and warm water and put ¼ teaspoon of mild dish liquid. Spritz onto the mattress and let it sit for 30 minutes.

5. Steam it

If you own a garment steamer or a steam cleaner, go over the mattress so that the steam can dispense the detergent efficiently. It also helps pull out the moisture from the mattress so it can dry faster.

6. Apply baking soda

After removing any visible stains, you can then apply a thin layer of baking soda over your entire mattress to absorb moisture and neutralise odour. You can leave the baking soda on your mattress for a few hours before vacuuming again.

7. Do the other side

Flip your mattress and follow the same steps mentioned above. It’s crucial to clean the underside because it can still harbour dust, odour, and moisture.

Tips to Keep Your Mattress Clean:

Deep cleaning your mattress takes a lot of time and considerable effort. To make cleaning easier the next time around, here's what you can do:

Consider a mattress protector

Now that your mattress is clean and dry, you can use a mattress protector to protect it from spills, dirt, and dust. It will also make cleaning much easier in the future.

Use fitted sheets

Fitted sheets also help keep your mattress clean and protect it from dust. When you use fitted sheets, you prevent dust mites from crowding the mattress.

Clean sheets weekly

Cleaning your sheets will help maintain the cleanliness of your mattress. Actively washing your bedding will reduce the buildup of dust and allergens on your actual mattress.

Avoid eating in bed

While breakfast in bed sounds luxurious, fallen crumbs in your bedding can attract bedbugs and other insects. Additionally, drinking coffee, tea, wine, and other beverages in bed may lead to accidental stains.

Improve the Quality of Your Sleep with a Clean Mattress

Regularly cleaning your mattress can extend its life and make sleep much more comfortable. Protect your investment through regular cleaning. But remember, even with proper maintenance, your mattress will sag with time. If your mattress has reached the end of its life, consider investing in a new one that can provide you with adequate support and supreme comfort.
