Some wise words on extending the life of your bed.

Making Your Bed Last

Beds are designed to last. The quality of bed you choose is important, and so is the way you treat it. Here are some guidelines and sensible suggestions from the people who know - the wise folk at Bedpost.

Things you should do:

  • Rotate your mattress frequently. Every two weeks in the first three months every two months after that.
  • Carry your mattress flat or on its side. Don't let it bend or twist.
  • When you replace the mattress on a spring bed, also replace the base. This ensures you new mattress will get the right support.
  • Ensure that your bed is regularly aired. If you have a flexible slat bed stand the mattress on its side away from the bed. This enables it to air much better.
  • Use a mattress protector or wool underlay to help keep your bed clean.

Looking after the fabric on your mattress and base:

  • Keep away from direct sunlight.
  • Vacuum regularly using low suction.

Spills and stains:

  • Treat spills and stains as soon as possible. Gently scrape away any soil or mop away any liquid from the surface. Apply white spirit to remove residue. Dry away from direct sunlight.
  • Don't ever saturate fabric with water or cleaning liquid.
  • Don't use dishwashing or laundry detergent.
  • Don't scrub the fabric with a stiff brush.
